Library Foundation Sponsors Cultural Celebration
By Cathy Tyson

The Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation is helping ring in the Year of the Ox via a two-week Asian Arts and Culture Celebration, entitled, "East Meets West."
Many free family-friendly events starting on January 27th are scheduled, including a Pajamarama story hour featuring Chinese ribbon dance by WenLan Ng's Folk Dance School, a ping pong demonstration at Acalanes with Yau-Man of Survivor fame competing with Kent Leung a National Senior Olympic champion, and Chinese cooking with TV chef, Shirley Fong-Torres. Additional events include exploring Chinese arts - calligraphy and origami, story hour with a special Chinese dragon craft, and a martial arts demonstration by Yu's Martial Arts School in Lafayette at Stanley Intermediate School.
The big finale of the celebration will be a benefit fashion show of unique Asian inspired clothing designs from Victor EastWest, Xiao and Orange Caterpillar on February 5 at the Lafayette Veteran's Memorial Building. A luncheon catered by Tin's Tea House Lounge and a one of a kind silent auction with very special items up for bid will round out the event.
"We tried to focus the events on things that would be of interest to a variety of ages," said Carolyn Bauer. She added that there has been a terrific response to the fashion show and that it's already sold out.

In semi-related news, President Barack Obama was born in the year of the Ox. According to Chiff.com, "People born in the Year of the Ox are supremely self-assured, and as a result are noted for inspiring confidence in others. Generally patient and thoughtful, they measure their words, and will speak clearly and concisely often when it matters most."
