St. Perpetua seventh-grader, Alexander See, took first place for his literary work "G.R.E.E.N." in the recent Youth Ink 2009 writing contest, which was established to support literary arts in the community and is sponsored by the Orinda Junior Women's Club. See was one of more than 50 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade entrants who either live or attend school in Orinda. Orinda Intermediate School (OIS) seventh-grader Michelle Wu won second place for "Un-deforested," and OIS sixth-grader Adela DePavia took third for "The Greens."
Local professional writers Melissa Manlove, Scott Ostler and Yvonne Prinz read and critiqued each submission. The following individuals were selected by the judges to receive an honorable mention: Linden Brentano, OIS, Grade 7; Carter Broad, OIS, Grade 7; Jack Brovelli, Atheniean School, Grade 6; Caie Kelly, OIS, Grade 7; Margot Mai, OIS, Grade 7; Gina Nerone, OIS, Grade 8; Nick Olivier, OIS, Grade 8; Maddie O'Shea, OIS, Grade 7; Lydia Raybal, OIS, Grade 8; Andrea Tuemmler, OIS, Grade 7.
"Participants in this year's Youth Ink competition displayed tremendous creativity in their interpretation of the contest's theme, 'Green.' They delivered a wide variety of entries - from poems to essays, focusing on topics ranging from the environment to mystery," said Maureen Brown, president of the Orinda Junior Women's Club.
Participants were honored at an awards ceremony at the Orinda Library Auditorium on April 30.
