Moraga Art Gallery presents a new group show, "Pitchers, Pictures and Lotsa Bling," featuring local artists showing watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings, ceramics, photography, mixed media, jewelry and glass designs. The show will run through January 9, 2010. The Gallery is featuring the work of potter Donna Arganbright, who enjoys creating original, functional pottery and painter Bob Wahrhaftig, who loves to paint with strong colors; most recently portraits and figurative paintings. Annual Holiday Sale:
Avid local potter, Kate Chenok, will be featured in the Clay Arts Guild annual holiday ceramics sale December 4 - December 6 in Walnut Creek. “All That Glitters,”open through Dec 24, is the annual holiday exhibit at the Lafayette Gallery, 50 Lafayette Circle, Lafayette, California 94549. Painting, prints, photography, ceramics, watercolor and mixed media art works feature memories and personal expression. Select gallery artists create artistic ornaments and cards to welcome the season. A gala holiday reception is planned for December 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. MUSIC
The Contra Costa Chorale will be performing in concert on Sunday, November 15th at 3:00pm. Guest Soloists include Courtney Bowes, lyric soprano and Chie Treagus, alto. The Chorale will be performing Vivaldi’s Gloria and several classical pieces by Faure, Beethoven, Mozart, Pinkham, Newbury, and Montanero. The Dancers Circle, directed by cofounder Genia Simpson, will perform Sunday, Nov 15 at 4 pm, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1035 Carol Lane in Lafayette. This group will take your breath away with their grace, expressiveness, and theological potency. Their program will use recorded world music from Latin America, Ireland, the United States and Iceland; in addition, they will dance to spirituals sung live by special guest artist John Thomas. In this variety of dance offerings in a series of beautiful costumes, you will enjoy a feast for the senses and a gift bouquet of artistic imagination. The Campolindo Music Department will present their fall concert on Thursday, Nov 19 at 7:30PM at the Campolindo Performing Arts Center, 300 Moraga Road, Moraga. The concert will feature performances by the Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic and Concert Bands under the direction of Harvey Benstein. Organ Recital by Rudy de Vos, Music Director of Oakland's new and architecturally striking Christ the Light Cathedral. The recital is de Vos' first opportunity to perform a full-length program in the East Bay area. The recital includes classic religious selections and is performed on the historic pipe organ in the Chapel at Saint Mary's College. The chapel pipe organ of Saint Mary's combines original pipe work and a classic façade from 1859, additional pipe work from 1901 and modern digital control systems completed in the year 2000. Big Band Ball Room Dance, Friday December 4 with the Rossmoor Big Band at the Art Deco Rheem Theatre in Moraga. Doors open at 7:00 pm and the dance runs from 7:30pm through 10:00pm. The Rheem Theatre is located at 350 Park Street, in the Rheem Shopping Center. The Theatre was built in 1955. It is one of the last “classic” theaters built in the Bay Area and was known for live big band in years gone by. Tickets are $10.00, sold at the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce office, located at 100 Lafayette Circle #103, Lafayette. Tickets may also be purchased at the Rheem Theatre. Saint Mary’s College Performing Arts Theatre Program presents a production of "At Mrs. Dalloway’s Party", an evening of short stories written by Virginia Woolf and adapted for the stage. Woolf’s innovative “stream of consciousness” narrative sets the evening’s entertainment simultaneously at a party thrown by the famous Mrs. Dalloway, and inside the minds of several guests. Wry observations and elegant prose come to life onstage through some of Woolf’s most amusing characters. The play opens November 12th for a two-weekend run in LeFevre Theatre on the Saint Mary’s College campus. Tickets are $15 general admission; $12 for non-Saint Mary’s students with ID as well as Saint Mary’s faculty and staff, and $8 dollars for Saint Mary’s students. Group discounts are available. Saint Mary's College History Dept Presents: Lincoln at 200 – in Fact Rather than Fiction. A lecture to commemorate the bicentennial anniversary of the birth of America's 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. U.S. History Lecturer Gerald Henig addresses questions such as: Was he genuinely interested in the welfare of African Americans? Was he an effective military commander? Henig examines Lincoln as great emancipator, commander in chief, political leader and attempts to separate fact from fiction. Joyce Maynard comes to Sweet Thursday at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, November 19, 7:30 p.m. Presented by The Friends of the Lafayette Library, literary icon Joyce Maynard will be the first author to grace the new building following its grand opening on November 14. Her newest novel, Labor Day, is a story of love, passion and the pain of adolescence. In addition to talking about her new book, Joyce will speak about the controversy surrounding her earlier memoir, and about story-telling and the writing process. Coffee and dessert will be served. Bobbie and Tom Preston will be doing the “Cycle Recycle”, collecting repairable bikes for refurbishing by the inmates at Marsh Creek Detention Facility again this year. The repaired bikes will be given at Christmas to under-privileged children throughout the county. Most needed are tricycles and junior bikes. Not only do the kids get the gift of a bike, the inmates learn the marketable skill of bicycle repair. New and/or used, repairable bikes may be delivered to the side driveway of the Preston’s home from now through the month of November only: 1307 Larch Avenue, Moraga. The Lafayette Senior Recreation Center was founded in 1950 and is operated solely by volunteers for the purpose of providing recreation and entertainment at monthly birthday luncheons, bingo, bridge, yoga and trips. They meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at the Methodist Church (not affiliated) at 955 Moraga Road, Lafayette. The group's Anniversary Celebration and Holiday Luncheon will be held at noon on December 10 at Zio Fraedo's Restaurant, 611 Gregory Lane, Pleasant Hill.
