 | | | Photos Ohlen Alexander | | | | | | Two hundred students from seven high schools put their creations on display at the 13th annual Visual Arts Competition sponsored by the Lamorinda Arts Council.
The record number of students submitted visual art in three categories: 2D, 3D and Photography.
"The student's artwork was stellar, absolutely exceptional," said Teresa Onoda, co-chair of the competition with Cindy Raleigh. "I really hope people from Lamorinda will come see the talent displayed by our young artists." All the artwork will be on display until the end of March at the Orinda Library Gallery.
Prizes were awarded on March 4 to the first, second, third and honorable mention placement winners. First place in the 2D category went to Sophia Lindgren from Acalanes; first place in the 3D category and Best of Show were awarded to Nora Guergah from Miramonte; and first place in the photography category went to Jaime Brown from Campolindo. The participating high schools were Acalanes, Bentley, Campolindo, Holden, Las Lomas, Miramonte and Orinda Academy.
"In my interaction with participating students and their parents, it struck me that many parents aren't fully aware of how much artistic talent their children possess," said Onoda. "Perhaps this is because so much emphasis is placed on academic and athletic achievement in our community. I hope that over time, accomplishments in the arts will add a third component to the things we prize and encourage in our young people."
All the student participants and their families are invited to a reception from 1-3 p.m. on April 24 at Saint Mary's College Museum of Art, where the winning pieces of art will be on display.
