Submitted by Gary Irwin
Vasch Elena Gerber of Moraga has been selected by Rotary District 5160 to be a Rotary exchange student to Taiwan for the 2017-2018 school year, and will be sponsored by Rotary Club of Moraga.
She is a Moraga resident and a freshman at Tilden Preparatory School, a 40-student private school in Walnut Creek that individualizes the pace and teaching method to address a wide range of learning needs. Vasch excels at languages and is studying Spanish, French, German, and Mandarin Chinese. She enjoys history and current affairs, and is a valued member of her school debate team.
Rotary District 5160 comprises the 72 northern California clubs, which currently has 11 inbound foreign exchange students and 11 outbound exchange students throughout the world. Vasch will go through many training sessions with her parents regarding foreign travel, culture shock, youth exchange etiquette, safety, host parents, host clubs, etc. between now and next summer. Moraga Rotary finances this training plus her Rotary blue blazer, and her parents pay all the insurance, visa and travel expenses.
Vasch will be assigned to a host city and host Rotary club in Taiwan in the spring. When she is assigned, she will be hosted for the year by that local Rotary Club which will provide her board and housing, school fees, and a monthly stipend of about $100.
Regular meetings of the Moraga Rotary are held on most Tuesdays at the Soda Center at St. Mary's College, and for further information, please call Frank May at 925-376-8195, or check out moragarotary.org.
