Moraga Road was reopened last week, several days ahead of schedule. Mountain Cascade, the contractor installing the new pipeline for the East Bay Municipal Utility District, worked fast over the summer and did not experience excessive delays from suppliers or underground surprises. They want to thank the community for their patience and understanding.
The early completion is good news for the Campolindo High School students and their parents who will be coming up from Lafayette. The contractor promises to be out of the road in front of the campus as well before school starts.
As for the students coming from Moraga and traveling on Moraga Road between Donald Drive and Rheem Blvd., it might be wise to plan extra time for that commute to school. The road is not closed, but for 1-2 weeks after school starts it will be restricted to two narrow lanes limited to 25 mph. Anyone who has tried to reach the high school just before the 8 a.m. bell can imagine that the heavy traffic may stretch for miles. (In an unrelated note, it had been proposed to reduce the size of Moraga Road to two lanes all along that stretch; this may be a good way to see how that idea might work.)
Once the work is finished around Donald Dr., Mountain Cascade will disappear from Moraga during the day time commute for a little while, working on the other end of the renovation project at the Lafayette Reservoir. At the same time, they will complete the pipeline at the intersection of Moraga Rd and Rheem Blvd., probably in the first weeks of September, but working only evenings and weekends to minimize the impact on commute traffic.
Last but not least, Mountain Cascade plans to finish the stretch between Donald and Draeger in mid-to-late October. All the dates are tentative. Obstacles and delays can always interfere with the work. |
