Orinda to Pave the Rest of Moraga Way
By Andrea A. Firth

As Orinda's City Council continues to grapple with the how to fund the repair of their decrepit roads, Moraga Way is poised for a facelift. The City Council recently voted to move forward with the Moraga Way Rehabilitation and Improvement Project, which will repave the road from Camino Encinas south to the Bryant Way on-ramp to Highway 24.
"I am excited about finishing the re-building of Moraga Way," states Mayor Victoria Smith. "Because it is a stretch of road that connects to the freeway and to Moraga, which makes it a route of regional significance, we were able-through Council Member Amy Worth's advocacy-to obtain regional funding for the project," she adds.
The budget for design and construction of the Moraga Way roadworks project is $1,170,000. Design will begin in early 2009 and construction is tentatively scheduled for the summer of 2010 according to City Engineer Janice Carey. The City intends to again use rubberized asphalt concrete as a paving material for the road surface which resulted in the quiet ride drivers now experience on the previously repaved southern segment of Moraga Way from Camino Encinas south to the city limits with the Town of Moraga.
"Another element of the project design will be to improve pedestrian facilities," says Carey. The pedestrian improvements tentatively will include the addition of a four-foot wide pedestrian path from Camino Encinas south to the signal at the intersection at Camino Encinas north and Camino Pablo and curb bulbouts-or curb extensions-where Brookwood Road and Southwood Drive intersect Moraga Way.
