The Campolindo High School Instrumental Music Department presents its Spring Concert on Friday night, May 15th, at 7:30 pm in the Campolindo Performing Arts Center. This concert, honoring the 42 Instrumental Music graduating seniors in their final performance in CPAC, will feature all the instrumental performing groups. Program highlights include: Jazz pieces by Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Louis Prima, and Dave Weckl; “Blue Goose Rag,” (Raymond A. Birch), and “Caribbean Rondo” (Pierre LaPlante) performed by the Concert Band; and “Funeral March” (Edvard Grieg), and “Variants on a Mediaeval Tune,” (Norman Dello Joio) performed by the Symphonic Band, and the Orchestra performing “Jupiter, from the Planets,” (Gustav Holst), and “Variations on a Rococo Theme” byTchaikovsky, featuring 2009 Campolindo Concerto Contest Winner, Mellisa Chu, Celloist. The concert is free and open to the public.

Acalanes High School students’ SAVE OUR SCHOOL Benefit concert 7:00 PM on May 15th at the Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church. The concert will feature classical and world music performed by students and professional musicians, including a finale with Gold Coast Chamber Players featuring Jeremy Cohen. Tickets are $20. 16th Annual Concert at the Res -Saturday May 16, 2009 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. The Lafayette Rotary Club’s FREE afternoon event showcases our local school music programs that play live music at the beautiful Lafayette Reservoir. The Rotarians who produce the show direct event proceeds to support local school music programs, and to help fund local charities and organizations. Performing at this year's Concert at the Res will be the Stanley Symphonic Band, the highly acclaimed Acalanes Wind Ensemble, the Big Band of Rossmoor, and the Bentley School Jazz combo. A free shuttle is provided for rides from main parking lot to the concert.

Unity Music LLC presents a night of jazz May 22, Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church 1801 Lacassie Avenue. The world famous Count Basie Orchestra, directed by Bill Hughes, and featuring local favorite, Jamie Davis, on vocals. Produced by Sam Beler, and in collaboration with the Generations in Jazz Foundation, all proceeds from the evening will go towards helping music students in need. Lafayette’s annual Jazz Café will be held Friday, June 5, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in the Stanley Middle School Auditorium. Jim and Jean Strathdee, internationally honored concert artists, worship, and song leaders, will perform at the Lafayette Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 5. Writers of “I Am the Light of the World” and hundreds of other hymns, songs and anthems, their concert will take place in the church sanctuary at 584 Glenside Drive, Lafayette. Seniors Softball Game and Picnic in Lafayette Friday May 15th. The Lafayette Senior Services Commission is putting on its very first softball game and picnic on Friday May 15 from 9 AM – 2 PM. Drop in any time to bat the ball, catch, or cheer from the stands. Lafayette Hiking Group Schedule. Meet in the north parking lot at Lafayette BART at 8:30 a.m., unless a different time is noted below. We form carpools to the trailhead. Bring lunch, water, layered clothing, good walking shoes, sun protection and money to contribute toward gas and parking. May 16: Morgan Territory Regional Preserve. Hike this beautiful open space beyond Mt.Diablo. The trails are mostly fire roads through the open space but there is one wooded hillside section. Distance 5 miles, easy to moderate. Diablo Memory Center will present a fun and educational seminar titled “Being Brain Fit” at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, at Stratford of Countrywood. The seminar is free and open to the public. May 28, Orinda celebrates Cal Shakes 35th anniversary and throws a big party, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Theater Square in downtown Orinda. The free event is opened to the public and will offer a whole array of attractions. L. Peter Callender from Cal Shakes will be the Master of Ceremonies. He will introduce performances by OIS students, Music by Sure Fire and, as one of the highlights of the evening, a 30 second Shakespeare competition between the three Lamorinda Chambers of Commerce. Orinda’s Shelby’s and Lafayette’s Yankee Pier will cater the food and all will be able to share in the 35th birthday cake. Cal Shakes will sell specially priced tickets to the opening night of Romeo and Juliet, the play that will be on stage at the Festival from May 27 to June 21. Raffle tickets will be sold. |
