"These structures were in poor condition and repainting them helped make the school look much better while it also added to their safety and durability," he said. "This project was at times tough and tedious, but in the end, it was a great opportunity to be outdoors with friends while doing something beneficial and to learn a great deal along the way."
Chase was one of three scouts from Lafayette Troop 219 awarded the rank of Eagle on May 30. Only 4 percent of Scouts rise through the ranks in scouting to receive this rank.
The other Eagle scouts, Acalanes junior William Hobson Nevin III and recent Campo grad Jake Partlow, also helped the community through their Eagle Scout projects.
Nevin and his team reconstructed new bleaches at the Acalanes Swimming Pool by replacing the wood seats and connectors and then painted them using the new Acalanes High School blue color. "The bleachers at the swimming facility were worn, had lost their paint protection and were becoming dangerous," said Nevin, who credits scouting with the opportunity to learn lifelong skills.
Partlow installed a sprinkler system in front of Lafayette United Methodist Church. "The project involved the installation of a water timer and sprinkler heads and took over 60 hours to plan and complete," Partlow said. "The previously barren area in front of the church is now alive with flowers and other plants thanks to the other scouts, the troop leadership, and my family and friends who helped me complete this project."
Troop 219 encourages each Scout to fully develop his potential and strive for the highest rank he can achieve. The troop adheres to the philosophy that a Troop member should participate in both Scouting and non-Scouting activities. Our Scouts feel a responsibility as well as a loyalty to Troop 219 because they freely make their own decisions about their degree of participation. The Troop scoutmaster is Stig Svedberg. He can be reached at 283-2369.
