Coming off of a two-point loss to El Cerrito, Campolindo looked to return to their winning ways against the Oakland Wildcats on September 25. The Wildcats had other plans and Campolindo suffered a 32-21 loss.
Right out of the gate, Oakland showed who they were with a 65-yard run from future Washington State player Damante Horton on the first play. The Cougars' defense held on and stopped the drive, giving the offense the ball on their 20 yard line.
Midway through the first quarter a Campolindo turnover gave the Wildcats another shot at offense. Three long runs for Oakland finally ended with a three yard touchdown run by Horton. The extra point was no good, and the Wildcats took the early 6-0 lead to the end of the quarter.
In the second, Campolindo's junior wide reciever Andrew Ahr came up with two key catches, for 14 and 20 yards, setting up junior half back Derick Margerum's seven-yard touchdown run. Junior kicker Marco Tavecchio's point after sailed through and Campolindo pulled ahead by one, 7-6.
On the ensuing kickoff, Oakland's Horton made himself heard once again, returning Campolindo junior kicker Jarrett Milner's kick 92 yards for another Wildcat touchdown. The two-point conversion sailed through the intended receiver's hands but Oakland still jumped back out in front, 12-7.
Another stellar 21-yard catch by Ahr put Campolindo in position to score. With two seconds left in the half, senior quarterback Tommy Stephens hit senior wide receiver Michael Hoffman from 16 yards out for a Cougar touchdown. A last second desperation bomb for Oakland fell incomplete; going into the half the visiting Cougars were up 14-12.
Oakland came out of the half to score a five yard touchdown, taking the lead 20-14 after a two point conversion.
To counter, Campolindo's senior wide receiver Patrick Wirth made a catch for 11 yards, and then Margerum broke free of the pack again to score a touchdown off a 41-yard run. Campo held on at 21-20 for the rest of the third.
To open the fourth quarter, Oakland scored on a 41-yard run of their own to take a 26-21 lead with 11:32 left in the game. With 6:40 left, the Cougar offense could not capitalize on a crucial first down. The Cougars failed to score on their subsequent drives and with a little over a minute left, Horton closed the game with a 30-yard touchdown catch, sealing the 32-21 win for Oakland.
Campolindo head coach Kevin Macy said, "We played two weeks of brutal teams and hope something will work out in the future."
Campolindo (2-2) will host Dougherty Valley this Friday.
