The Orinda Garden Club (OGC), in conjunction with the Garden Club of America's centennial celebration in 2013, is initiating a tree restoration project on the shores of Orinda's Lake Cascade. With the approval of the Orinda Country Club, which owns Lake Cascade, OGC has restored a number of the Quercus Subers (Cork Oaks) located on the north shore of the lake and planted by OGC in 1945. The project included pruning the major trees, clearing the under story and removing some of the invasive plants which were encroaching in the area.
A 250 foot site was selected for the first phase of the restoration and included 8 of the 15 cork oaks located around the lake. The work was done by Horticultural Services, Ltd. and Cleary Brothers of Orinda.
The Orinda Garden Club has a continued interest in preserving and improving the plantings along Lake Cascade. It was responsible for planting the Cork Oaks in the early 1940's as an Orinda beautification project. Again, in 1963, the Club added other trees and shrubs along the lake front. The Club felt this was an appropriate project to celebrate its continued involvement and dedication to Orinda beautification.
