Residents near Del Rey Elementary School in Orinda woke today to the sound of fire trucks rolling down the street and a helicopter hovering loudly overhead as the Moraga-Orinda Fire District, and at least one local television station, arrived at the scene of a fire that broke out in a portable classroom at the school early this morning, November 25. Crews from MOFD Station 44 responded to a report of a fire alarm sounding at the school at 6:43 a.m.
School was not in session, but staff working on site helped firefighters gain access to the room. Battalion Chief Jeff Maxwell said the fire, which was in the attic space above the ceiling, “appears to be the result of an electrical problem associated with the heating and air conditioning system for the portable.”
In a written statement, Fire Marshall Mike Mentink said the fire was under control in about 15 minutes, and damage was limited to the classroom where it started. The structure sustained an estimated $18,000 in damage and $2,000 in content loss.
