Against a strong head wind, in a narrow channel of water in Redwood City, the Oakland Strokes rowers showed what they can do at the Stanford Invitational. Racing a 2000 meter course with little more than one boat length at the end of the course to stop the boat before colliding with the rocky shoreline, Varsity Women were "unstoppable" against Los Gatos, Newport Aquatic Center and CRI. The lead stroke, Elizabeth Lenczowski, and coxswain Molly Fehr are both from Miramonte High School.
The Varsity Men's boat made a heroic effort against the Newport Aquatic Center, a team that Strokes Men have failed to outrace recently. The 2000 meter race began with the two teams nose to nose at 500 meters. Then Newport moved ahead by three seats and stayed in the lead with Strokes following. With the last 400 meters to go, Strokes led by one full boat length and started their sprint for the finish. Oakland Strokes Men's Varsity Eight beat Newport by two full boat lengths, crossing the finish line with a time of 6:39.1, a substantial eight seconds over Newport.
The winning MV boat was manned by Ian Drake (Miramonte), David Hosler (PHS), Haydn Bierwith (Athenian), Sebastian Rocky Davis (Miramonte), Zack Attaran (Acalanes), Jack Andreoni (PHS), Alex Sheridan (Campolindo), Billy Deskin (Campolindo) and Coxswain Alexander Steele (Miramonte).
