Diablo Foods Supports Alex's Lemonade Stand
For three years in a row, a small group of Lafayette children have been raising money for cancer research by operating an 'Alex's lemonade stand' in front of Diablo Foods. "My children heard the story of a little girl who suffered from cancer and ran as many 'Alex's lemonade stands' as she could," says Jennifer Aaker, mother of the Smith children, "they were so touched by her that they decided to do the same." The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is a non-profit that helps in the organization of lemonade stands by providing the necessary outfitting and sends the money collected to cancer research for children (https://www.alexslemonade.org/). "Diablo Foods supports us by letting the kids run the stand by their front door," says Aaker, "it gets us a lot of foot traffic." This year the children made $1047.44 based partly on matching funds and fueled with Odwalla Lemonade. "We didn't ask people to pay anything," commented Aaker, "just to have a cup and if they wanted to donate to Alex's Lemonade Stand, they could." "I like to get money to help others," said her 8-year old son, Devon Smith. "Doing the stand helps children with cancer," added 8-year old Sophie Foster. The Foster and Smith children plan to run another event next year.

Guest Speaker: Mary Jane Ryan "Surviving Change You Didn't Ask For." Change is hard, we say, and it is even harder when change is forced upon us. In today's tough times, we may be forced to reinvent our career or downsize our lives; at any point in life, we may lose a love or a dream. Our first reaction to change we didn't ask for may be to rail against fate. But what if we could see past today's turmoil and spot the opportunities that lie within unasked-for change? That is the promise of AdaptAbility, M.J. Ryan's paradigm-shifting new book on not merely surviving but thriving when change is absolutely required.
