Over 90 players participated in the Ace It! tournament sponsored by Orindawoods Tennis Club to benefit breast cancer work at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland. In the morning they took clinics offered by local pros, Keith Wheeler, Patric Hermanson, Steve Squire, Bard Rieser, Brad Shak and Dr. Alison Rhodius, sports psychologist.
Winners of the afternoon round robin tournament were Marcy Sharafian and Carmen Duarete in the women's 4.0 division, Jane Balg and Bonnie Cornell, in 3.5 and Kristine L and Chris Rascle in 3.0. For the men, Steve Lawrence, Adam Reeves and Alex Axelrode won in the 3.0 bracket. Al Keys and Chris Kline were tops in the 7.0 mixed doubles, Debbie Goettsch and Karl Brown in the 8.0 division. These matches were played on courts provided by Orindawoods, Orinda Country Club, Bentley High School, and Sleepy Hollow Swim and Tennis Club. At noontime everyone enjoyed the raffle and gourmet luncheon prepared by volunteers.
"We're proud that we presented a check for $10,000 to Steve Lundin, president of the Alta Bates Summit Foundation. It will go to support the Carol Ann Reed Breast Cancer Health Center," said Tessie Siegel. "To date, in the eight years Orindawoods has sponsored this event, almost $100,000 has been raised as we 'Play for the Cure.'" Lysbeth McNeill adds, "We hope even more players will plan to play in 1011.It's fun to be with friends playing tennis while supporting a great cause." Others on the Ace It! committee were: Joe Kerner, Danielle Signorella, Lynda Lawrence and Keith Wheeler, Orindawoods Executive Director.
