| | | | | | Three Lafayette siblings swam with their father in the bay from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco in an event called the Alcatraz Challenge. On July 18th, Maddy (age 13), Spencer (age 11), and Jack (age 10), swam the 1.5 mile distance from the Rock. This was Maddy's third swim from Alcatraz, Spencer's second. It was Jack's first open water bay experience. Besides being members of the Rancho Colorado Swim team in Burton Valley, the three trained for several months in Aquatic Park, getting used to the 55 degree water temperature, rough currents and marine life.
Maddy finished fourth in the Female 19 and Under group, with a time of 1 hour and 11 minutes. Spencer finished in 1 hour and eight minutes and Jack in 1 hour and five minutes.
