Gas Leak in Orinda
|
As the clean up continues after San Bruno’s devasting gas line explosion, several residents near downtown Orinda were temporarily evacuated Wednesday night after a natural gas line ruptured when a backhoe hit the pipe during road work on Moraga Way .
According to Moraga Orinda Fire District Fire Marshal Mike Mentink, at approximately 11:20 Wednesday night emergency services personnel responded to a reported rupture of a 6-inch natural gas line on Moraga Way in downtown Orinda. The MOFD and Orinda Police, along with representatives from PG&E, immediately secured the area. Emergency personnel ordered a precautionary evacuation affecting 14 residences, but the order was lifted after about 90 minutes when it was determined that the leak was actually a 2-inch pipe and the size of the leak was not as severe as initially reported.
Moraga Way was closed between Camino Pablo and Brookwood Road as PG&E crews worked to control the leak and repair the line; the road was reopened Thursday morning. Currently there is no estimated time when work will be complete, but by 8:00am Thursday morning PG&E began restoring gas service to surrounding businesses.
City Manager Janet Keeter, who was on the scene, stated, “Thankfully the situation was not worse, and that it occurred during the night with most businesses closed and minimal impact to Orinda residents. There were no injuries or property damages reported.”
