The Joaquin Moraga sixth grade basketball team took home the championship trophy at the Martinez Junior High Invitational Tournament, which was held March 9-11. The Marauders defeated host Martinez, 42-28, in the opening game, held off a tough Albany team for a 43-41 overtime victory in the semi-finals, and then won a thrilling 48-47 come-from-behind shocker versus Willard in the Championship game.
After a steal with 9.5 seconds left, JM took the ball out of bounds at mid-court, down 47-46. Zack Duffy found Matt Kronenberg cutting to the basket and Kronenberg hit a lay-up to give the Marauders their first lead of the night with just four seconds left. JM held on to win it 48-47.
Matt Kronenberg scored 29 points in the final game, and was named tournament MVP. Michael Hooper scored 11 in the final game, and was named to the all-tournament team.
