Nearly 20 teams from throughout the East Bay gathered to compete in the 20th Annual Battle of the Ages Swim Meet in Pleasant Hill June 25-26. Considered one of the area's premier invitational meets, the competition was fierce. While Crow Canyon Country Club placed first overall, the Lafayette teams put in a strong showing as well. Springbrook and LMYA battled for top team honors placing fifth and sixth respectively.
Lamorinda swimmers captured top individual honors in their respective age groups this weekend and were recognized as High Point Winners: Sean McKenna of Sun Valley (12 yr old boys); Nicholas Inserra of Springbrook (14 yr old boys); Megan Schussman of LMYA (15 yr old girls); Barbara Lanier of Springbrook (17 yr old girls); and Ryan Connolly of Springbrook (17 yr old boys).
Coaches from all the teams could be seen distributing gold caps throughout the weekend to signify a swimmer's qualification for the County Championships in August.
The 2011 swim season got off to a wet start, forcing many teams to postpone their time trials and pre-season meets due to the unusually rainy spring. Despite the weather, spirits are high as the competitive season is finally taking shape.
LMYA head coach Marc Cavallero remarked "I am excited to bring the team back to our home pool. Acalanes has been our team's home for over 50 years and the new pool will be a fantastic venue for the upcoming Lafayette City Meet and County Championships. I expect we will see many records broken this year!"
