Girl Scout Troop 30662 members and Miramonte High School seniors Katherine Latimer, Cecily Schmidt, Alicia Macler, and Ashley Juarbe each earned the Girl Scout Gold Award. The four completed projects involving more than 100 hours. Katherine Latimer started a pilot art program teaching photography classes in an after-school enrichment program. She taught the classes for eight weeks and finished up the class with an art show. Cecily Schmidt created a neighborhood disaster program, creating a preparedness video and manned an informational booth on disaster preparedness at the Orinda Farmers' Market. Alicia Macler taught cooking and nutrition classes at Shelter Inc. in Antioch. Her classes emphasized healthy meals on a limited budget. Ashley Juarbe created a week-long summer camp for the children at Shelter Inc. The camp included crafts, sport activities and a family barbecue. This fall Katherine will attend Villanova University, Cecily will attend UC Berkeley, Alicia will attend UC Santa Barbara, and Ashley will attend University of Redlands.
