Moraga native Katharine Holm is helping protect children in her hometown this summer as part of a Linfield College public service internship.
"This internship is a way for me to give back to the community that gave me so much when I was growing up," said Holm, who is working for Parents for a Safer Environment (PfSE) in Moraga. The grass-roots volunteer organization, formed in 2002, seeks to protect children from preventable environmental hazards through education, research and advocacy.
As a summer intern, Holm will work on projects to help reduce the use of dangerous pesticides in the county. The Linfield College environmental studies student has participated in outreach and education at summer festivals, advocating for effective, economical and more environmentally-friendly alternatives for pest control issues ranging from ants and rodents to weeds.
PfSE advocates for least-toxic pest control and other sustainable practices at both the State and local levels.
Holm will be a senior at Linfield College in the fall. She has been an active member of Greenfield, a student environmental organization, and will serve as the president of the school's Circle K Club. She plans to pursue a career as an environmental educator.
Linfield's Public Service Internship provides educational opportunities to liberal arts students, expanding the learning experience outside the classroom and preparing students for advanced professional or graduate work. Linfield is one of the few schools in the Pacific Northwest dedicated exclusively to undergraduate education.
