As of last weekend the Campolindo freshman volleyball team, pictured after the Northgate Tournament, was 5-0 in DFAL and 20-3 overall. DFAL play continues for all of the Campolindo volleyball teams at home against the Acalanes Dons on Thursday (Frosh 4 p.m., JV 5 p.m., Varsity 6:30 p.m.). Photo provided
The first serve at last Saturday's Northgate Freshman Volleyball Tournament flew over the net at 8:30 a.m. Twelve hours later, the Campolindo Cougars finally headed home, exhausted but proud of their second place finish.
Twenty-four teams participated in the tournament. Over the course of the day the Cougars beat Liberty, Cardinal Newman, College Park, Castro Valley, Lincoln, and Northgate to earn their spot in the championship game. The team rose to the occasion, playing some of its best volleyball of the season at the end of this very long day, but lost a remarkably close game against Marin-powerhouse Redwood.
Coach Daniella Inzerillo said, "I am so proud of these freshman girls. It was a great day of play and we grew as a team and as a family. We didn't take the championship victory but we won so much more in the end. We played better than we ever have and I couldn't be more proud. We're excited to enter the second half of the season on a high note."
