Photo Gint Federas | | | | | | The perfect opportunity is coming to meet some local, everyday heroes as they compete on their police motorcycles against others for the ultimate reward - bragging rights. Oh, and of course, get some training in the process.
From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.10 and Sunday, Sept.11, the Lafayette Police Traffic Safety Division is hosting the second annual Lafayette Police Motorcycle Competition at Stanley Middle School. The competition is being held in honor of the fallen police officers of 9/11 and recent local fallen officers.
Proceeds from the event will go to the nonprofit organization, www.OurFallen.org, whose mission it is to provide financial relief to the families of fallen officers within 72 hours of their in-the-line-of-duty death.
Opening ceremonies will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
A classic car show sponsored by Lafayette Auto Body will also be held all day Sunday, Sept. 11 with food trucks and various vendors on site as well.
Last year's competition was held in conjunction with the Art and Wine Festival in the BART parking lot. There were 42 riders from all over the state and from as far away as Carson City, Nevada. Because of the success of last year's event, the number of officers participating this year is expected to double.
