 | | | Photo provided | | | | | | The city has recently added another way of keeping its residents up to speed for emergency information and instructions when needed. Lafayette's community information and emergency radio station is now broadcasting continuously on 1670 AM.
Serving as an extra channel of communication, which could be critical during wildfires and power outages when cell phone and the internet may not be working, as happened last year in Lafayette's fire that destroyed the tennis club, the station will provide an alternative for delivering vital information to residents directly.
The AM station will broadcast information during times of disaster such as wildfires, as well as details on PG&E power outages. During non-emergencies residents will hear general city information and news, details on events and programs, and general visitor information about Lafayette.
The station, put in place by the work of the Lafayette Police Department's John Cornell together with Information Station Specialist Technician Tom Coviak, is housed at the LPD and can be heard for a 6- to 7-mile radius. It covers all of Lafayette, portions of Moraga, Orinda, Pleasant Hill, and Walnut Creek.
The station's FCC-designated call sign is WRHU776.
Residents should have the station saved in their cars as well as on their AM radios for up-to-date information. |
