| Orinda’s Council Says No to Leaf Blower Ban
| By Andrea A. Firth | | |
“This matter is now closed,” said Mayor Tom McCormick and with a rap of his gavel the Orinda City Council voted unanimously to deny the citizen group Quiet Orinda’s request for a complete ban on leaf blower use in the City.
At the Council’s Tuesday night meeting, Quiet Orinda supporters implored the Council to ban leaf blower use in the City to curb the noise nuisance and air polluting hazards they believe are posed by the ubiquitous garden maintenance equipment. However, many of the 150 residents who packed the Library Auditorium passionately voiced their opposition to an outright ban on leaf blower use noting the undue hardship this would present for them to maintain their properties. In the end, the Council found that there was not a sufficient consensus to warrant a ban.
Currently leaf blower use in Orinda is regulated under the City’s noise ordinance and confined to set daytime hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with gas-powered leaf blowers prohibited on Sunday. A complete summary of the Council and public discussion of the leaf blower ban will be in the next issue of the Lamorinda Weekly.
