Lafayette's Measure B Parcel Tax Passes
By Cathy Tyson

With nine of nine precincts reporting, it's official, the Lafayette School District Parcel Tax measure passed with 74.19% of the vote. Measure B, a $176 per parcel tax for the next four years, easily met the two-thirds yes votes required to pass. The measure will raise $1.5 million annually to preserve core academic funding in math, science and technology, along with art and music programs, classroom computers and more.
Opponents complained about the senior citizen exemption and a one size fits all cost to land owners, who pay the same $176 per year regardless of parcel size.
Calling it a vote of confidence for extraordinary teacher and support staff, Lafayette School District Superintendent Dr. Fred Bill couldn't be happier, "The success of the election is a testament to the community's commitment to maintaining a public education of the highest quality. The citizens of Lafayette have a long history of doing whatever it takes to ensure that we, educators, have the necessary resources and support to provide the richest educational experience for all students." He adds, "At the end of the day, it is our students who are the true beneficiaries of your commitment to their educational program."
