Saint Mary's women's volleyball is off to a slow start this season. The Gaels are 4-6 so far, losing to top teams including No. 8 Illinois and No. 11 Nebraska. Despite the rough beginning, the team has also picked up some big wins against #18 Duke and Notre Dame.
The Gaels fell in their season opener to UC Santa Barbara in five sets and then were swept by No. 8 Illinois in the BYU Nike Invitational. Saint Mary's picked up its first win of the season over the tournament hosts, BYU.
With a 1-2 record, SMC welcomed Cal Poly to McKeon for their home opener. The Gaels fell to the Mustangs in four sets on August 30.
Undeterred, Saint Mary's traveled to Palo Alto to compete in the Stanford Invitational, September 2-3. The Gaels knocked off No. 18 Duke in five sets. The victory over the Blue Devils is the highest ranking win since the Gaels defeated No. 13 San Diego in 2008.
Saint Mary's rode the momentum from the victory over the Blue Devils into their next match and swept Notre Dame. Juniors Lauren Corp and Missy White were both named to the Stanford Invitational All-Tournament team. Corp recorded a team-high 28 kills and White notched 102 assists and 20 digs on the weekend.
The Gaels went 1-2 in their next tournament, the Ameritas Players Challenge hosted by Nebraska. Saint Mary's opened with a sweep over Weber State but fell to No. 11 Nebraska and Creighton on September 9-10, respectively.
Saint Mary's is scheduled to host a tournament this weekend at McKeon Pavilion. The Gaels will play Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
