For the first time ever, the United States has triumphed in the World Youth Fly Fishing Championships. The competition was held on the Tiber River in the Tuscany region of Italy from August 30 through September 1.
Robbie Wirth, a senior at Campolindo High School, was California's lone representative on Team USA. Wirth finished tenth overall in the individual competition.
"I've been tying flies, studying rivers and where they hold fish, and working on my technique for years, said Wirth. "It all paid off in Italy, where my teammates and I worked together to come up with the fly patterns and strategies to bring home the gold."
Team USA will defend its World Title in the 2012 championships in France. For more information, go to http://usyouthflyfishingteam.com.
