The Lafayette Flag Brigade hosted one of the largest overpass flag display in the state on the tenth anniversary of September 11 at the El Curtola Bridge. With New York Fireman Sean Hickey, who was present at 9/11, as the VIP speaker and three large sections of steel recovered from the World Trade Center, this was their biggest event ever.
As in years past - the entire event is non-political and included Blue Star Moms, local Boy Scouts - and a candlelight vigil at sundown. Mike Harris of Harris Trucking donated his time and his truck to move the massive steel sections all the way from Palm Springs to Lafayette. Supporters enjoyed the festivities and those who happened to be driving by on Highway 24 honked their horns.
Two pilot trucks escorted the vertical support beams and gigantic I-Beam. "It's a very tactile exhibit - you can see it and touch it," says co-founder of the event Jim Minder of the Lafayette Flag Brigade. The highlight for many was when a Huey helicopter followed the big rig to the corner of El Curtola and Old Tunnel Road and did a fly over.
