This summer eight Girl Scouts from Lafayette Troop 31017 completed their Silver Award. Working together over a 15 month period, the girls chose to focus on helping young families with tips and tools to encourage early childhood literacy. In June they worked with the Contra Costa Child Care Council to meet with 20 families in Concord and then in August they worked with 15 families at Shelter Inc in Martinez. Altogether the girls created 50 bags, each containing eight to ten toddler books, a cozy fleece blanket and a brochure with tips to encourage parents of young readers (remaining bags will be distributed through Shelter Inc.)
To raise funds and book donations, the girls, along with the rest of their troop, hosted the annual Lafayette Skate Party on March 9th for over 30 Lafayette Girl Scout Troops. 400 scouts hit Golden Skate to celebrate 99 years of Girl Scouting in America. Hosting an event of this size is quite an undertaking and the general consensus following the event was that it was really fun to see how the event came together after months of planning but the actual event went by all too quickly.
