After being picked to finish last in its division at the beginning of the season, the Campolindo Cougars are now North Coast Section Division III champions. A 21-yard field goal by sophomore Christian Antezana as time expired gave the Cougars an improbable 20-18 win over favorites Marin Catholic. The kick sent the Campolindo faithful on hand at O.co Coliseum into a frenzy. “You can see how special this night was,” said Cougars head coach Kevin Macy, who has led the team to a 14-0 record this year. “There was something magical this year, about these kids, these fans, and the school.” Just after Marin (13-1) took its first lead of the game on a field goal with 2:18 remaining in the fourth, Cougars quarterback Brett Stephens pushed for a 64-yard scoring drive, finding Mason Windatt on a 44-yard pass, paving the way for Antezana's last-second kick. “You dream of situations like that, and we took advantage of it,” said Stephens, who finished 17 of 27 for 246 yards. Campolindo football was selected to play in Carson, CA at the Home Depot Center on Saturday, December 17 at 12:00 p.m. for the CIF Division III State Championship. |
