Improving the Streetscape, Piece by Piece
Photo Cathy Tyson

Phase One of a major renovation of Lafayette's downtown sidewalks is well underway. The first phase - from the Round Up to Postino - is slated to be complete by January 30. Fear not, happy hour patrons at the Round Up, the contractor will maintain pedestrian access for the bar and other businesses. Where jackhammers are now, imagine lovely paver sidewalks and new landscaping similar to the attractive and inviting streetscape in front of the Mercantile Building. Sudhish Mohindroo, a partner in SZFM Design Studio, worked on the renovation of La Fiesta Square and the Mercantile Building and is also the designer of this streetscape project. According to the contractor's schedule, by late June, working in phases, most of the downtown section of Mt. Diablo Boulevard will be transformed, and the work is substantially paid for by a federal grant.
