| Published February 15th, 2012 | Bentley Basketball Wins League Championship | Submitted by Clay Kallam | | | It's never been better at Bentley. Coach Rob Rafeh, in his first season as the men's basketball coach at the Lafayette campus, has guided the Phoenix to the most wins in school history. Bentley also recorded its first Bay Counties League East championship.
The key to the 19-5 overall record, and 11-0 BCL-East mark, is pair of wins over Head-Royce, a school where Rafeh coached in the past. Head-Royce has been the perennial power in the league, but the young Bentley team has defeated Head-Royce two times this season. Bentley will likely face Head-Royce again in the BCL-East playoffs on Feb. 17-18.
The Phoenix are led by lone senior, 6'5" center Ben Hummel. Hummel is averaging 10.7 points per game and 9.1 rebounds. Hummel is a soccer goalie who will play for Princeton next year. "He would be something special if he focused on basketball," said Rafeh.
The other starters include junior guard Nate Ellis, Malcolm DeForrest, and a pair of freshmen, Blake Kami and Josh Ross. Ellis is the leading scorer with 18.8 points per game.
With plenty of success already this year, the Phoenix are looking to make some noise in North Coast Section.
