On Tuesday, January 17, students from Orinda's Del Rey Elementary School participated in a hands-on prairie restoration project at their school. Led by a team of biologists and volunteers from The Restoration Trust, the 4th and 5th grade classes removed non-native species, such as English Ivy, planted over a 1,000 native grasses and wildflowers and had a chance to learn the importance of prairie habitat. The restoration effort began in 2009 along Moraga Creek with teacher John Moran's 4th grade class. Students have returned to the Creek every year to monitor their projects.
The Restoration Trust is a non-profit land trust dedicated to providing educational opportunities to the community for the benefit of native habitat restoration. Visit www.restorationtrustonline.org for more information.
