SMC rugby earned a win 33 years in the making. After five years of close matches but no wins, the Gaels downed East Bay rival Cal, 20-18, on April 15. It was the first time since 1980 that the match-up did not have any bearing on post-season play, but neither team let that lessen the intensity.
Saint Mary's scored a penalty kick with three minutes left in the game to come from behind to capture a 20-18 lead and take the win.
The Gaels host the University of Utah on May 5 for the first round of the playoffs.
