Parents gathered at the Moraga Country Club Tuesday, May 8, to see the voting results for Measure A. For the first time in many years, the school bond failed. The additional parcel tax would have required residents to contribute $225 to support the schools. The Contra Costa County Elections Division semi-official results showed that of 10,172 registered voters, 5,336 returned their mail-in ballots; 3,438 voted yes, short approximately 120 votes to get the two-thirds majority needed to pass the measure.
“This is the end of Moraga as we know it,” commented one disappointed parent. This morning (May 9), Moraga School District Superintendent Bruce Burns noted that a similar parcel tax failed in Moraga in the 1980s and that it didn’t stop the school district from asking again, and from getting the community support it needed. “We will persevere,” said Burns. “While we may not have had success, it is very important, in these challenging times, to rally the community and ask for its support again. This is what we must do for the Moraga School District.”
