The Orinda Moraga Girl Scouts honored 16 Silver Award recipients, and 26 graduating scouts, 15 of whom earned the Gold Award Sunday, May 20. The Silver Award is the second highest award girls can earn in Girl Scouts; the Gold Award is the highest.
To successfully complete the Gold Award, each scout had to spend a minimum of 65 hours planning and executing their project. In addition to receiving a rose for their years of membership and their Gold Award pins, Howard Harpham, vice mayor of Moraga, and Victoria Smith, Orinda City Council member, presented each Gold Award recipient with a letter or proclamation from their respective city recognizing their achievements.
Gold Award recipients included:
Sophia Angelides, Maren Kjell, Elizabeth Mediati, (Troop #30346) and Megan DeTrane, Tatiana Gessling, Maddie Larson, and Alanna McCauley (Troop #30794) from Campolindo, Tara Baghdassarian, Ashley Juarbe, Katie Latimer, Alicia Macler, and Cecily Schmidt (Troop #30662) as well as Selena MacDuff, and Annie Odell (Troop #32905) from Miramonte, and Orinda native Hanne Andersen (also of Troop #32905), who attends Principia High School in Missouri.
To earn the Silver Award, after completing all the prerequisite work that involves learning about specific topics, leadership, career exploration, and community service hours, each scout spent a minimum of 50 hours planning and executing their project.
Silver Award recipients worked on the following projects:
Katie Coates, Sharon Maher, and Juliette Rosso (Troop 30273) led a half-day summer "camp" for children at a low-income apartment complex. They played games, did crafts, had lunch, and made ice cream. They also donated balls and art supplies. Emily Friese, Fatima Hasranian, Nicole Perrin, Sarah Rockwood, Marie-Clarie Schillinger, and Hannah Whitbeck (Troop 30446) made pillowcase dresses for girls in Africa.
Megan Adachi, Campbell Beaver, Hannah Durant, Kristen Ghamghami, Cessi (Alexandra) Nishimi, Jenna Schmitz, and Jennifer Sullivan (Troop 31426) promoted being a sister Girl Scout within our community by encouraging participation of Daisy Girl Scouts and aiding our local service unit; and educated our community on earthquake preparedness and aided victims of the earthquake and Tsunami by donating money to the American Red Cross.
The following Ambassador Scouts, who are all graduating in June, were recognized for their years as Girl Scouts and presented with a rose:
Kelly Leonard (Troop # 30346) and Gianna Labarile, Jacquie Miller, Ashley Padon (Troop# 30794) from Campolindo, as well as Melanie Jones, Sophie Wegener, Sofie Woodlee, Cassie Zaffanella, and Emelia Hildreth (Troop # 30662) and Hannah Swernoff (Troop # 32905) from Miramonte. (Hildreth's Gold Award project was completed after the ceremony; her pin will be awarded at another time.)
