| The Boy Scouts of America awarded the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout to five scouts from Orinda Troop 237 at the Court of Honor ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16 at the Orinda Community Church. The new Eagle Scouts are: Michael Ross Anderson, Jaikar Beasley, Adam Roeder, Matthew Stewart and Tyler Young.
Aklan District Commissioner Mark Weyland opened and closed the ceremony. Reverend David Ricketts, Associate Pastor of Moraga Valley Presbyterian Church, provided the Invocation and benediction.
Tyler Young's community service project was to clear away debris and construct outdoor steps at Grotto Rock Park in Berkeley to promote easier access to sections of the park that suffer mudslides and to make the park safer in times of emergency. Once the park was made ready the slope, rise height, tread depth and run were established to dig out the dirt and secure each step with three-foot rebar.
Matthew Stewart refurbished the Track & Field Record Board at Miramonte High School. With the help of many Boy Scouts and volunteers, he painted the frame, affixed to the board 63 plates engraved with record holders' names, and installed new Plexiglas covers to complete the board.
Adam Roeder restored a brick pathway in the Wagner Ranch Nature Area in Orinda. He and his volunteers used recycled bricks, masonry sand, base rock and guide rails, and created a permanently improved entry and wheelchair access into the garden.
Jaikar Beasley renovated a large hillside in front of Gurdwara (Sikh Temple), Hayward. He and his volunteers removed weeds, dead shrubs and trimmed the trees, planted 10 new Italian cypress trees, 10 decorative shrubs and 50 creeping juniper as ground cover; restored two flower beds with new perennial flowers; improved the irrigation system.
Ross Anderson repainted over 5,000 linear feet of old, faded or missing playground lines of the four-lane-track, six basketball courts, two four square courts and two wall ball courts at the Northern Light School in Oakland, for underprivileged kids.
Each candidate must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, including 12 Eagle-required badges. They must also demonstrate leadership, outdoor skills and Scout spirit. Finally, they must successfully complete a service project with a minimum of 100 volunteer hours to earn the Eagle award.
Boy Scouts of America Troop 237, chartered by the Orinda Community Church, has been serving the Orinda community for more than 58 years and has recognized 193 Eagle Scouts over its history.
