They're Back - Movies in the Plaza
By Cathy Tyson

Building on the success of the inaugural year, Plaza Park at the corner of Moraga Road and Mt. Diablo is the "go to" destination for Friday nights this July. Son of Movies in the Park I, the 2012 version is bigger and better than ever - with a snack bar from Whole Foods, JT Productions in charge of the film and sound and even flavored ice care of Cold Stone Creamery. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and City of Lafayette, organizers have thought of everything for this outdoor movie series.
This free community event is meant to bring residents closer together, perhaps over a Red Vine or two, enjoying an evening on the grass. The family friendly line-up of films includes a couple classics - kicking off the first popcorn-fueled night on July 6 is the 1989 film "Field of Dreams" - starring a very youthful Kevin Costner. Hard to imagine, but there's a new generation of kids that have probably not seen this movie; their parents are old enough that perhaps they forgot everything but the catch phrase, "If you build it, they will come."
The following Friday, July 13, "Jaws" will be screened - who doesn't like a giant, man-eating Great White Shark? Thank goodness Lafayette's only coastline is along the creek.
The Muppets, on July 20, features people, puppets and a classic story of reuniting Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang who have all gone their separate ways, to save the Muppet Theater from a bad guy.
Wrapping up the series is the charming Robert Downey, Jr. as "Ironman" on July 27.
The nominal gathering time each Friday is 8 p.m., but the movies will actually begin at sundown. Jay Lifson, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce offers this practical advice, which he creatively refers to as his "'Outside Movies for Dummies' instructions:"
1. Bring your friends and family
2. Stop by a local restaurant and pick up some victuals
3. Grab your lawn chairs or blanket
4. Tall families to the back of the lawn please.
5. Buy some goodies at the Whole Foods Snack Bar
6. Sit your booty down and enjoy the movie
7. Leave only your footprints

Every Friday night in July - Lafayette Plaza Park
July 6, Fields of Dreams
July 13, Jaws
July 20, The Muppets
July 27, Iron Man
