| Three Moraga Orinda Fire District firefighters and a male driver, who was not identified as of our press deadline, were injured the wet and windy morning of Dec. 2 after MOFD responded to an accident on Highway 24 east of the Wilder exit.
According to MOFD Fire Chief Randy Bradley, while firefighters were investigating the non-injury accident their fire engine was struck by a car that failed to stop due to extensive rain, resulting in minor damage to both vehicles but no injuries. The firefighters were standing off the shoulder of the highway interviewing the driver when another vehicle lost control, struck the side of the fire engine and rolled into the three firefighters and the driver of the first vehicle.
Bradley would not release the name of driver who was being interviewed but said that he was transported to John Muir Hospital with critical injuries.
MOFD Captain Michael Rattary, firefighter paramedic Kelly Morris, and firefighter Stephen Rogness were transported to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Morris and Rogness sustained leg fractures requiring surgery.
Bradley said the driver of the car that rolled, who was also unidentified, refused treatment for minor injuries. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
