Since the e-waste collection project began in September 2009, Rotary Club of Moraga has collected more than 16 tons of electronic waste, disposing of it according to California law. They also provide a document shredding service. Held semi-annually at the Moraga Shopping Center courtesy of the Bruzzone family, each of the seven events collected an average of 2.3 tons, although the mix of waste is changing - not as many large screen TVs as in previous years, and more boxes to be shredded now.
Citizens dropped off their e-waste at the Moraga Shopping Center where the Sunday Farmers' Market is held. Televisions, monitors, laptop computers, flat screens, cell phones, CPUs, cell and wired phones, printers, copiers, DVD players, fax machines, VCRs, stereos, ink jet cartridges, and video games were dropped off. Many items were taken at no charge, but there was a small charge for some items.
Workers at the Sept. 8 event included Moraga Rotary members Tony Schoemehl, Kevin Reneau, Lad Lynch, Frank May, Cliff and Mary Elena Dochterman, Grant Shoaf, Herb Wehmeyer, and Lou and Debbie Roessler, and Chairman Rich Render. They were reminded of the old song, "Sixteen Tons," and were humming it to help meet this goal.
Rotary Club of Moraga is a local service club within Rotary International that meets most Tuesdays at noon at Saint Mary's College. For information, please call President Frank May at (925) 376-8195.
