| Aegis Residents Evacuated Due to Small Fire | By Nick Marnell | | |
Twenty residents were displaced from the Aegis of Moraga Assisted Living Center the night of Jan. 24 after a dryer fire caused damage to the first floor of the structure.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., Engine 41 of the Moraga-Orinda Fire District responded to a call for an appliance fire. “When (the crew) arrived, there was light smoke in the front entrance,” said Battalion Chief Sean Perkins. “Since the fire alarm went off, the main hallway doors, which are fire doors, automatically shut.”
When the fire crew went inside they found the hallway full of smoke. They searched the dryer room and extinguished the fire, which was limited to one large commercial dryer. The fire and smoke activated the sprinkler system.
The fire crew assisted with evacuating residents. “Our biggest concern was getting the people out,” said Perkins.
Aegis residents were temporarily housed in two MOFD ambulances and one Aegis bus while the fire crew removed the smoke and put the sprinkler system back online. By midnight, the residents were ushered back into the building.
“Their biggest issue will be the water damage from the sprinkler system,” said Perkins, who immediately began his investigation of the incident. |
