High School Artists Dazzle at 10th Annual Visual Arts Competition
By Laurie Snyder
First Prize - 3D (the ceramic castle entitled, Tangled) Cari Carter, 11th Grade, Miramonte

The Orinda Arts Council kicked off another stunning showcase of artwork by Lamorinda area high school students when it announced the winners of its 10th annual Visual Arts Competition March 6. Attendees at the event studied thought provoking jewelry, ceramics, paintings, and photographs.
Caitlyn Sit, a 12th grader at Campolindo High School, took home second prize in the 2D category for her painting, "Violin with Candle and Sunflowers." The oil work was created as part of her college portfolio. She plans on pursuing a career in design.
Albert Miao, a Miramonte 12th grader heading for the University of California, Santa Barbara, was awarded second prize in the 3D category for his "Sharkring" fashioned out of silver. He has been creating crafts, clay, and metal works for the past two years, and employed his shark design because of the images and feelings it evokes when wearing and viewing the piece.
Cari Carter took home the 3D first prize for "Tangled," a ceramic castle which draws viewers from across the Orinda Library Art Gallery to the case where it is displayed. An 11th-grade student of Miramonte High School's Gavin Kermode, Carter explained that she actually made each brick in the castle by hand. "I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my art. I want mine to be pristine ... no loose ends." She's been creating art since elementary school, and is currently working on a slab sculpture mural. She plans to pursue a career in kinesiology which will enable her to design prosthetic devices.
