Miramonte Leads the Pack in Boys' Tennis
By Marissa Harnett

As the high school boys' tennis season gets underway, defending NCS champion Miramonte has once again emerged as a dominant force. Just three matches into league play Miramonte is undefeated, boasting an 11-0 overall record and 3-0 in DFAL. Campolindo is 0-2 in league (3-5 overall) while Acalanes has logged 2-1 in league action.
Last week brought the Lamorinda rivals together for the first of two rounds of league face-offs. On March 5, Miramonte traveled to Campo where the Mats gave up one match to defeat the Cougars, 8-1.
Playing in the No. 1 singles spot, Campo sophomore Tilden Oliver felt good going into his match against senior Luke Bohuslav. "We've played tons of times." Oliver said. "He's better than me and has beaten me most times... [but] if my games are on, I might come out with the win."
Last year, Oliver upset Bohuslav and won the match that clinched the team win against Miramonte. It was Miramonte's only league defeat last season.
On this day, though, Bohuslav took home the win, 6-1, 6-1. The match was closer than the score suggests. Both boys battled hard for each point, exchanging deep, fast shots that barely cleared the net.
"I played well all around. I was moving really well and was super consistent." Bohuslav said of his performance.
Miramonte's strength comes from experience, depth, and new talent. "We return 10 of our 12 top players from last year NCS team championship team and we have added an outstanding freshman, Alex Hwang," head coach Michael McCollom said.
"Our team is very good led by seniors Luke Bohuslav, number one singles, and Andrew Tan, number one doubles," he added. Both players are returning DFAL champions in singles and doubles, respectively.
Campolindo graduated seven seniors last year - more than half of its team. "This is definitely a rebuilding year for us. We have a lot of good players, but the rest of the league has gotten better," head coach Petro Petreas explained. "It will be hard for us to win league, but we are looking forward to beating the top teams."
"As usual, our goal is to make it into the NCS Team tournament," he added.
On March 7, Miramonte hosted Acalanes. The Dons have great players but have struggled with depth; this year's team has promising new talent. Although the Dons are improving, the Mats came out on top, winning 7-2.
Acalanes took the No. 1 singles match with junior Dan Cardiff defeating Bohuslav in split sets, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0. "Our # 1 Dan Cardiff is the best player in the league and he sets the tone of hard work by getting in the gym or on the track before school," head coach Brent Bird said of Cardiff's contributions to the team.
The Dons won in the No. 3 doubles slot. Freshmen Conor McGlynn and Nico Brightbill defeated senior Tanner Wendt and sophomore Bryce Hummer, 6-3, 6-3. "We have a young team so many of the kids are discovering how to compete and the doubles players are learning how to work together," Bird explained.
Acalanes took the win against Campo, 7-2, in the first match of the season on Feb. 28. The Lamorinda rivals will meet again for another round of action beginning in late March.
