SMC Men Reach WCC Finals

Saint Mary's men's basketball qualified for the WCC semifinals by finishing No. 2 in WCC regular season play. With a match-up against the No. 6 USD Toreros, it appeared the No. 2 Gaels were poised for a return to the finals. However, the Toreros forced overtime on Saint Mary's before the Gaels were able to eke out a 69-66 win.
Senior guard Matthew Dellevadova went only 2-for-10 from the field, but had the biggest basket of the night. Dellevadova hit the game-tying three-pointer with less than 10 seconds on the clock to push the game into overtime.
"First of all, I had no doubt that that was going in," freshman guard Jordan Giusti explained. "I know how he plays. He steps up in the clutch every time. Dellave-dagger. We wouldn't want anyone else taking that shot."
Earlier this year, Dellavedova made a three-quarter court shot as time expired to beat BYU on the road, earning him the "Dellave-dagger" nickname.
Sophomore center Brad Waldow lost a tooth during the game, but continued to play. He scored a career-high 23 points and tied his career-high 16 rebounds.
Junior forward Beau Levesque had 19 points before fouling out in regulation.
The Gaels advanced to play No. 1 Gonzaga on Monday night after the press deadline. Check lamorindaweekly.com for the results.
