The United Professional Firefighters of Contra Costa County, Local 1230, announced Jan. 29 that the Moraga-Orinda Fire District board of directors has declared an impasse in its ongoing contract negotiations with the firefighters union. "We consider this action an insult," said Vince Wells, president of Local 1230. "The board has been under pressure due to some of their financial decisions and now they want to correct these errors on the backs of their firefighters." That an impasse was made public by the union was a surprise to board president John Wyro. "I have been under the supposition that these discussions were confidential," he said. "We've got a financial problem that we are trying to deal with. The negotiations have broken down, and we are at impasse." The district and the union have been in negotiation for over three years; the firefighters are working under a contract that expired in 2010. Look for in-depth coverage of this breaking story in the Feb. 12 issue of Lamorinda Weekly.
