Mayor Plays at Mayor's Concert
Photo Ellen Reintjes

At the 18th annual Mayor's Concert the Stanley Symphonic Band had a special guest artist, Mayor Don Tatzin on the baritone horn. Because this is his sixth time as mayor, he's enjoyed the band over the years as a listener, but this was the first time he was able to unveil his hidden talent as a euphonium player.
With proud parents ringing the band room, Tatzin and the student band members did not disappoint. They played an interesting variety of music that included the majestic theme from "The Man from Snowy River," the "National Emblem" - a rousing marching band piece - a swashbuckling medley from the Pirates of the Caribbean and Tchaikovsky's "Chanson Triste."
Tatzin had been practicing, but commented on his rustiness, noting the 45 year gap since he last played. He fit right in with the toe tapping students calling it "a great experience." He got high marks from director Bob Athayde, for listening closely and using Smart Music, music education software for students, to get up to speed. No report card for his morning of music, this was strictly an extra credit assignment. C. Tyson
