Three Orinda Persian Cats Hope to Find New Homes

Three Orinda cats, Hattie, Tori and Chika, are looking forward to being adopted during the Community Concern for Cats free cat and kitten adoption weekend as part of Maddie's Pet Adoption Days May 31 to June 1 in Lafayette. The three felines are a part of "The Sweet Sixteen" which once had a good life but lost it all when their elderly owner was moved into a care facility. Unfortunately, he made no provisions for his 16 Persian cats and so they were put outside to survive as best they could. CC4C was asked to help and contacted Dr. Laurie Langford of Theater View Veterinary Clinic in Orinda, whose care made it possible for 11 out of the 16 to be adopted quickly.
Normally CC4C charges from $100 to $125 to adopt, but this weekend adoptions are free to qualified homes, thanks to Maddie's Fund, which has set aside $10 million this year to give stipends to rescue organizations and shelters for each animal that finds a home. The stipends range from $500 to $2,000 for each adopted cat. Cats that are older or have treatable/treated health issues bring in the larger Maddie's donations. Last year CC4C had 74 adoptions during this event.
"Most people don't realize that the regular adoption fee doesn't even come close to paying the cost of rescuing a cat - costs include tests, vaccinations, deworming, medications, flea treatments and spay and neuter. So the funds from Maddie's Days allow us to do more rescues all year long," says Candace Olsen, past CC4C president.
"Finally, someone is doing something good for animals in a very visual way," adds CC4C president Gemma Osendorf-Boyd. "We are very thankful for Dave and Cheryl Duffield, founders of Workday and PeopleSoft, who started the fund."
For 29 years, CC4C has been offering spay and neuter, foster care, adoption, and medical rehabilitation for abandoned and homeless cats and kittens. They lend traps and provide trap-neuter return programs as needed. The adoption days will be held at Pet Food Express in Lafayette on Saturday, May 31 from noon to 5 p.m., and Sunday, June 1 from noon to 4 p.m. CC4C adoptions will also take place at Pet Food Express in Pleasant Hill and Petco in Walnut Creek during the same hours.
