The California Magic 99 Girls soccer team won the 2016 Surf Cup (U18 Super Group Champions) at the SoCal Sports Complex in Oceanside, July 30-Aug. 1. With stellar offensive and defensive play, the Magic played five games in three days, never trailed, and outscored their opponents 9-1.
"I am very proud of our team," said Haris Obic, Magic director of coaching. "Their outstanding commitment during an intensive, spring and summer training cycle was rewarded with a readiness to overcome all obstacles on the way to the championship.
"We faced elite and well-coached competition during this year's Surf Cup, and to play so consistently well is a tribute to the collective development of this team," Obic added.
After advancing through a challenging group bracket with the Legends FC (Chino), Irvine Slammers, and Eugene, Ore. Timbers, the Magic played the Del Mar / Carmel Valley Sharks in a taut semi-final. After 70 minutes of regulation play and 20 minutes of overtime, the game was tied 0-0. The Magic then prevailed 3-1 in a penalty kick tiebreaker to secure their spot in the finals against the Corinthians from Corona, Calif.
In the title match with the Corinthians, the Magic scored the first and only goal at only 1:15 into the game, and managed the game through ball possession to earn the clean sheet and create a half a dozen goal scoring opportunities.
