Associate Civil Engineer Mark Summers began working for Moraga on July 29. Somewhat of a local, he was born in San Francisco and currently lives with his family in Walnut Creek.
According to Public Works Director Edric Kwan, "Mark will focus mainly on land development projects but will work on a diverse array of other assignments, including town capital and storm water related projects."
Summers earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from San Diego State University, a master's in civil engineering from San Jose State University and a Project Management certificate from UC Berkeley Extension, which will all help him to get his feet wet with the new Los Encinos development, the Moraga Town Center Homes and the upcoming Storm Drain Operations and Maintenance Program.
Although Summers was happy in his last job, he admitted, "I've wanted to get into public sector work for a long time. Opportunities are usually pretty competitive." He came across Moraga's listing on CalOpps - a government jobs posting site. His prior experiences were with Walnut Creek's Aliquot, where he served as water resources manager and Australian-based GHD as a transportation engineer.
Summers had initial concerns about his decision to quit a job that he enjoyed and was worried that the new experience wouldn't be comparable. His fears were soon laid to rest. "Moraga is a great place to work," he said. "Some public sectors are not committed to working hard, but in Moraga everyone is involved and they work together."
Summers was amazed at the level of projects happening around town, saying, "There's a lot of work for a small town. I was surprised at how much work that public works was doing."
